18th Century Gown

Software/Medium: Marvelous Designer, ZBrush, Maya, Substance Painter, Marmoset Toolbag
Reference/Source: Extant historical garments (own design)
Project Type: Coursework (solo)

My first foray into costume creation for games – coming from a traditional sewing background, I wanted to try and apply those skills to virtual clothing. This is based on a mishmash of extant garments from the late 1700s (and a few gowns from ‘The Duchess’ film), and is fairly historically accurate in shape if not textile choice. I’ve experimented with texturing fabric and attempted to replicate the shift-color effect of silk taffeta.

Clothing created in Marvelous Designer, detailed in ZBrush, retopoed in Maya, textured in Substance Painter, rendered in Marmoset. Halfway-optimized at 157k polys in the full scene.
